Principle 2: Today’s business environment can be merciless for the individual who gets complacent about learning. Why? It doesn’t take long for knowledge to become outdated. No one is immune from job insecurity; even college and university students find that their skills and knowledge can be obsolete within a few years. Middle and senior managers as well as stakeholders are realizing that some industries don’t change…they simply disappear.
The most effective and adaptable people on the planet have an understanding of ‘Specialized Knowledge’ and you should too. This not only makes you indispensable but also makes you ‘portable’ in your career. You become extremely valuable because Job security is something you create, not something that any company can give.
The real key to success in your position is not less problems but the ability and willingness to develop more skills. Don’t think about ‘leaving school,’ invest in on-going education. Learn like your life depends upon it. This kind of knowledge will make you valuable and indispensable in your career.
Being out of date is something that’s easy to do, particularly when you know your job inside and out. Information and knowledge are constantly changing, so to remain a valuable employee, stay ahead of the game by not becoming complacent about professional development. The learning that you do after school is what really counts, otherwise you only know what others know.
Given today’s work environment, only the best survive and thrive in the business community because there is simply no room for those who won’t grow. Education represents the effectiveness of not only an individual or a family, but it also represents an organisation. Therefore, regardless of your age or your position, learning to learn, and then learning to think about what you learn is critical.
To be a valued employee, you will consistently remain a student instead of a follower, as continuous learning builds internal strength.
I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. Knowledge accumulates in universities, because the freshmen bring a little in and the seniors take none away. If we’re going to be competitive tomorrow, we have to learn to relearn, today.
Knowledge and education are the primary defense of a resilient nation. And while the learning you gain in school is important, the learning you gain after school is what really counts.
Whether your current position demands extra learning, advancing in your career will always require your expansion and that means looking for ways to constantly improve yourself and your skills. In the end, the responsibility for success lies with you, for remember, ‘underemployment leads to unemployment’.
To broaden your experience, take the initiative to implement some reading, workshops and volunteer activities, as this will broaden your horizons. one training workshop can introduce you to a whole new world of possibilities and provide you with exciting and innovative tools that change your perception and your results. Use the information you gain and once used, seek out additional opportunities for growth. Without it you become obsolete. With it you become indispensable.
Valued employees recognize that their job is never over. It’s time to behave as if you’re in business for yourself because in today’s business environment employers are more interested in self-directed, entrepreneurial individuals that are wholly empowered by their own efforts. The person that shines is the one that assumes a self directed approach and responsibility to learning because they are the ones who will always be in demand.
