Our son Leo, is a lively three and a half-year old that enjoys playing tennis in a group for toddlers every Saturday morning. One early August morning, after a fun lesson, he decided to race back to the car. He let go of his mothers hand, and ran towards me, in an instant, he tripped on some loose gravel and fell hard onto the rough ground. His knees and arms scraped against the stones, and for the first time in his life, he saw his own blood.
Shocked and scared, he screamed with tears welling up in his eyes. “Daddy!” he cried, his voice trembling.
I was there in an instant, lifting him into my arms. “It’s okay, son,” I whispered, gently wiping away the tears. “You’re tough and brave and, you’re going to be okay.”
Leo sniffled, looking down at his scraped and bloody knees. ‘It hurts Daddy’, he said but a few reassuring words eventually helped ease the fear.
A while later when the pain subsided, I was talking to him about falling over, being brave and having courage, to which Leo responded;
“I’m okay, Daddy,” “because, i’m always standing up on the inside.”
Remarkable Thinking. Powerful message. Thanks Leo x
This is the message of Performance Capability; that irrespective of our age of ability, that we are always ‘standing up on the inside.’
